CPOE Compliance
Building Workflows That Make the Right Thing the Easy Thing
High CPOE compliance isn’t achieved by reminding physicians to enter more orders. It comes from designing workflows that make physician order entry efficient, intuitive, and consistent.
Improvement begins by understanding how physicians actually work. Every unnecessary interruption, fragmented request, or inefficient electronic workflow competes with clinical decision-making.
We work across disciplines to remove that friction—establishing clear communication expectations with nursing, incorporating mobile workstations into rounds, simplifying commonly used orders and physician favorites, and reinforcing that physicians should enter their own clinical orders whenever possible.
The goal isn’t simply compliance. It’s making the compliant workflow the easiest workflow.
Closing the Gap
Compliance reports tell you where the problem is. They rarely tell you why it exists.
We routinely review physician-specific data throughout the month, giving physicians visibility into their own performance and allowing opportunities for coaching before the reporting cycle ends.
When a barrier is identified, we work directly with physicians, nursing, information technology, and hospital leadership to address it—whether the problem is unnecessary interruptions, difficult-to-find orders, inefficient order sets, or a workflow that encourages verbal orders.
We track it. We stay in it. And when the behavior changes, we make sure the system is built to keep it that way.
Our CPOE compliance has consistently remained at or above 85% because we focus on improving the system that supports physician performance—not simply measuring the outcome.
